Work-Life Balance is important to maintain. As HR, Recruiting and Staffing Professionals we are very familiar with this. Even for us working in the employment services industry where we assist people with finding careers, and give them advice for being successful at work, it is very easy to slip into a non-stop work week, letting all leisure time be left in the dust. We have found that a good way to keep that from happening is to schedule in activities into your day. It may feel more like work at first formally scheduling things, but it will help get you into the habit. Unfortunately regular entertainment can get expensive which makes you want to work more to help offset the cost, and it just turns into a downhill spiral.
Luckily there are a lot of activities and things to do around the valley year round that are low cost or even free, if you know where to look.
Some of these things include:
The ASU Art Museum – They have three locations throughout the Valley that offer free admission. The exhibitions regularly change, as do the open hours for the museums so be sure to check their website for the current hours before going.
Libraries throughout the valley offer ‘culture passes’ to different attractions and shows throughout the valley. The passes change regularly but can include things like the Desert Botanical Garden, the Zoo, or even tickets to the Ballet or Plays. They have a limited number of passes to give out at any give time, but you are able to check for passes online and which libraries have them in stock before you go. To get the passes you must have a library card. You check the passes out like you would a book, and they are valid for 7 days. (Typically these passes exclude special events- and are only good for regular daytime admission.) You are only able to get one pass (that is good for 2 people) per week per family. So be sure to keep that in mind. Even if you have more than 2 people in your group, at lease it helps offset the total cost.
The Valley Bar in Phoenix offers a free game night on Mondays (provided it is not a holiday) after 4:00 PM for adults 21 and up. This is a good place to socialize and practice your Skeeball, pool and shuffleboard skills.
Lululemon regularly hosts free yoga classes on Sundays at 10:30 AM at their Biltmore and Scottsdale Quarter locations, and at 9:00 AM at their Chandler location. They usually have a pretty big turnout for their yoga on the lawn during the cooler weather. This is a good way to try yoga if you have never done it before, or just get in an extra class before brunch.
Several local bars throughout the valley offer free dance classes. Most of the classes are for beginner to intermediate levels (those advanced dancers are welcome too.) This is a great way to try out a new hobby without spending money on private lessons, and get in a good workout.
Dave and Busters at Tempe Marketplace offer Free Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata lessons on Wednesday and Sundays.
Denim and Diamonds in East Mesa offers free country dancing lessons on Wednesday and Saturdays.
Bourbon jacks in Chandler offers free Arizona Two-Step Lessons on Tuesdays.
And, Casino Arizona offers free line dance and partner dancing lessons in the Arizona room on Wednesdays.
Peoria, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Mesa and Queen Creek all have a food truck night (either Friday or Saturday nights depending on the city) These can be a lot of fun to go to even if you aren’t interested in eating. The often have a band playing, and activities for kids. (Some you can even bring your dog to since they are outdoor events.)
This is just a short list of things that are offered locally. A quick look on google can really point you in the right direction for things to do nearby to help give you that break from work during your time off, without breaking the bank.
We firmly believe that allowing time for entertainment and activities during free time, makes you more productive and happier with your work. If you are looking for a career change, or new opportunities feel free to check out the current openings that Allstaff Services Inc has to offer, that are posted on our job board here.
